“CLOSED LOOP SCHOOL RECYCLING”

CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN SCHOOLS

The "LCI CLOSED LOOP SCHOOL RECYCLING" project was launched in 2017 with the goal of "closing the loop" for sustainable waste paper recovery, starting directly from the consumer. It took an entire year to complete the pilot project, which was first introduced in Oderzo. At the beginning of 2018, the first recycling bins were delivered to two schools in Oderzo, marking the beginning of separate paper and cardboard collection. Each month, this material was collected by a local recovery company, which handled packaging and preparation before sending it to UPM group paper mills and other LCI partner mills.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

  • Schools collect paper materials in dedicated containers provided by LCI S.r.l.
  • A local recovery company collects the material monthly, transporting it to its authorized warehouse for packaging and storage.
  • LCI S.r.l. delivers the material, depending on its type, to its UPM paper mills (for recycling white paper, magazines, and newspapers) and to partner mills (for recycling cardboard and paperboard).
  • These paper mills close the loop, producing new paper from recycled fibers, ensuring significant resource savings, forest preservation, and waste reduction.
  • At the end of the year, LCI S.r.l. provides each participating school with a certificate, indicating the total amount of paper collected and recycled, measured in tons.

BENEFITS

  • Each participating school had a private area on the www.lci-srl.it website, where they recorded the amount of collected materials after each pickup.
  • The weight of the material was assigned a value, based on the month of collection.
  • The price was determined by the "Chamber of Commerce of Milan" price list, referring to the following materials:
  • Code 130 - Material type: 1.02.00 - Mixed Paper and Cardboard
  • Code 160 - Material type: 1.06.00 - White Paper, Magazines, and Newspapers
  • The monthly listed price was the rate paid to schools participating in the project.

ACCUMULATION SYSTEM

  • For each ton of collected paper, schools earned a monetary value (e.g., €40.00), which was stored in a "savings account" available for various expenses.
  • Each school's total earnings were recorded on a dedicated and private section of the www.lci-srl.it website.
  • Whenever a school decided to use its accumulated funds, it would submit a request to LCI S.r.l., which would then process the financial contribution.

This project represented an excellent opportunity to drive a much-needed revolution in the optimization of natural resource use and waste management. By reducing landfill disposal and waste incineration for energy purposes, the project successfully integrated environmental responsibility, economic value, and social impact. It provided young students with the chance to be key players in an epochal shift towards a more sustainable and eco-conscious world. This initiative encouraged them to become responsible citizens, committed to protecting the environment and Mother Earth.
